How to make an 8-point paper star cutout
8 Point Paper Star: try all 9 steps in the 3D player. Turn and replay every move. Print the complete diagram sheet or save it as PDF.
Fold a square in half three times and once more along the angle between, so every layer meets at the centre in a narrow wedge. One straight cut opens into an eight-point star.
- You need
- Thin paper, a pencil, a ruler and scissors.
- Start
- Begin with a 15 × 15 cm square of thin paper. A set square or protractor helps with the last fold.
Your model is ready
Ease the creases flat. Lift the opened paper by an uncut edge to see the whole pattern. Hold the opened paper upright and flat, with the whole pattern.
Step-by-step diagrams
- 1
Fold the square in half
Bring the bottom edge to the top edge. Mark the midpoint of the folded edge; this is the centre of the star and every later crease starts there.
- 2
Fold it in half again
Fold the left half over the right half so the centre sits in the corner of a small square.
- 3
Fold the corner in half
Bring the upper-left edge down over the bottom edge. The crease runs diagonally from the centre.
- 4
Halve the wedge
Fold the long sloping edge down to the bottom edge again. The packet is now a narrow wedge of sixteen layers pointing at the centre.
- 5
Make one straight cut
Mark a point 3.5 cm from the centre on the bottom edge and a point 6.75 cm from the centre on the sloping edge. Cut straight between the marks through every layer. Keep the small piece containing the folded centre.
- 6
Open sixteenth
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 7
Open eighth
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 8
Open quarter
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 9
Open half
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
