How to make a paper quilling tight coil

Paper Quilling Tight Coil: try all 3 steps in the 3D player. Turn and replay every move. Print the complete diagram sheet or save it as PDF.

Easy3 steps3 mm × 30 cm · One rectangle

Wind a whole quilling strip round the tool with no gaps, then glue its end: the solid little disc that makes flower centres, wheels and eyes.

You need
A 3 mm × 30 cm quilling strip, a slotted quilling tool, craft glue and a toothpick to apply it.
Start
Begin with one quilling strip, 3 mm wide and 30 cm long, lying flat with its long edges at the top and bottom.
Tips
  • Keep the strip's edges level as you turn the tool, so the coil stays flat on both faces.
  • Hold the coil between finger and thumb as you take it off the tool, so it cannot spring open.
Finish

Your model is ready

Your tight coil is done: a firm disc of paper with a small hole in its middle. Use it as a flower centre or a wheel, or roll several in different colours. Turn the coil to see the spiral of the strip's edge on its face.

Step-by-step diagrams

  1. 1

Roll the strip on the tool

Slide the left end of the strip into the slot of the quilling tool. Turn the tool, guiding the strip with your other hand so each turn lies snug on the one before, until the whole strip is wound on.

  2. 2

Lay the end on the coil

Keep hold of the coil so it does not loosen. Press the last few millimetres of the strip down flat against the turn beneath it.

  3. 3

    Glue the end

Put a tiny dab of glue under the end with a toothpick and hold it against the coil for a few seconds until it holds. Then slide the coil off the tool.
