How to make a five-pointed paper star cutout
Cut A five Pointed Star: try all 9 steps in the 3D player. Turn and replay every move. Print the complete diagram sheet or save it as PDF.
The historical angle-division method folds a half-sheet into two and a half sectors, folds the remaining half sector under, then halves the packet. One straight cut opens into a five-point star.
- You need
- Thin paper, a pencil, a ruler, a protractor or the printed angle guide, and scissors.
- Start
- Begin with a 12 × 12 cm square of thin paper, a ruler and a protractor or the printed angle guide.
Your model is ready
Ease the creases flat. Lift the opened paper by an uncut edge to see the whole pattern. Hold the opened paper upright and flat, with the whole pattern.
Step-by-step diagrams
- 1
Fold the square in half
Bring the bottom edge to the top edge. Mark the midpoint of the folded edge; every later crease starts there.
- 2
Fold a 72° sector across
From the midpoint, measure 72° upward from the left folded edge. Fold the left sector over this ray. It covers the next 72° sector, leaving a smaller 36° sector on the right.
- 3
Fold the remaining sector behind
Fold the small right sector underneath the packet along the ray 36° above the right folded edge. Match its edge to the middle ray of the larger packet.
- 4
Halve the packet behind
Fold the left half of the 72° packet underneath its right half. Line up the two long edges. The final wedge is 36° wide, with ten layers near the centre.
- 5
Make one straight cut
Mark 20.4 mm from the centre on the left long edge and 50.4 mm on the right long edge. Cut straight between the marks through every layer. Keep the small piece containing the folded centre.
- 6
Open wedge half
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 7
Open small sector
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 8
Open large sector
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
- 9
Open half
Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
