EasyAn Origami Tutor design12 steps12 × 14 cm · One rectangle

A rectangular gift box with a lid that stays attached, cut from one sheet of card. Glue tabs on the side walls fold round onto the front and back walls, so the box holds its shape.

You need
One sheet of card, 12 × 14 cm, a ruler and pencil, scissors and glue.
Start
Use a sheet of card, 12 × 14 cm, white side up. From the top mark the rows 4 cm for the lid, 3 cm for the back wall, 4 cm for the floor and 3 cm for the front wall. From the left mark the columns 3, 6 and 3 cm: the floor is the middle box of the floor row. On each side wall mark a tab 1 cm tall at both edges, 0.3 cm in from each end.
Tips
  • Glue the tabs one at a time and hold each for a few seconds.
  • Score each crease lightly with a ruler and a dull pencil point first.
  • Cut the tabs narrower than the walls so they stay clear of the lid.

Steps 1–7

  1. 1

    Crease the back wall

Fold the top of the card down along the back edge of the floor. Press the crease and open it flat.

  2. 2

    Crease the front wall

Fold the bottom of the card up along the front edge of the floor. Press the crease and open it flat.

  3. 3

    Crease the left wall

Fold the left wall up along the floor's left edge. Press the crease and open it flat.

  4. 4

    Crease the right wall

Fold the right wall up along the floor's right edge. Press the crease and open it flat.

  5. 5

    Crease the lid

Fold the lid forward along the top of the back wall. Press the crease and open it flat.

  6. 6

Cut away the top left corner

Cut down from the top edge, 3 cm from the left, to the back wall's top corner. Cut 0.3 cm left, up 1 cm, left 2.4 cm and down to the wall's edge, then left to the edge of the card. The corner lifts away and leaves a tab.

  7. 7

Cut away the top right corner

Cut the right side to match: down 9 cm from the left, then round the right tab.

Steps 8–12

  1. 8

Cut away the bottom left corner

Cut up from the bottom edge, 3 cm from the left, to the front wall's corner, then round the tab below the left wall, mirroring the top.

  2. 9

Cut away the bottom right corner

Cut the bottom right in the same way. You are left with a cross with four tabs.

  3. 10

    Raise the four walls

Stand the four walls up at right angles to the floor, with the lid hanging back.

  4. 11

    Fold the tabs round

Fold each of the four tabs round the corner, so it lies flat on the outside of the front or back wall.

  5. 12

    Close the lid

Fold the lid forward over the top of the box.
