Step-by-step diagrams

  1. 1

    Fold the square in half

Bring the bottom edge to the top edge and press the crease. Mark the middle of the folded edge lightly; it is the centre of the snowflake.

  2. 2

    Fold it in half again

Fold the left half over the right half so the centre sits in the bottom left corner of a small square.

  3. 3

    Fold the corner over

Bring the upper left edge down over the bottom edge, so the packet is a narrow wedge with eight layers pointing at the centre.

  4. 4

    Cut the first star

Mark a point on the bottom folded edge 34 mm from the centre. Cut half of a five-point star around it, 6 mm from its middle to the points. Start on the fold at the point that aims at the rim and end on the fold at the notch opposite it.

  5. 5

    Cut the second star

Cut a matching half star on the slanting folded edge, also 34 mm from the centre, with its point aiming at the rim.

  6. 6

    Cut the arms

Start at the end of the bottom folded edge, 56 mm from the centre. Cut in along one arm, 10 mm from the fold at its widest, narrow to a point between the arms, then go out along the next arm to the end of the slanting edge. The paper beside the arms falls away.

  7. 7

    Open eighth

Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.

  8. 8

    Open quarter

Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.

  9. 9

    Open half

Open this crease gently, leaving the earlier folds closed. Keep the uncut joins together.
