A flat pair of broad paper trousers with a folded waistband, two separate legs and turned-up cuffs. This Origami Tutor cut-and-fold design uses one square; it is our paper-doll adaptation rather than the traditional triple-blintz hakama sequence.
- You need
- One 8-inch square of two-color paper, a ruler, a pencil and scissors. No glue.
- Start
- Begin with an 8-inch square, colored side up. Mark lines 1 inch from the left, right, top and bottom edges. A ruler helps keep the waistband and cuffs equal.
- Tips
- Stop the leg cut below the waistband so the hips stay connected.
- Keep both cuff folds at the same height.

Step-by-step diagrams
- 1
Fold the left side behind
Fold the left edge behind along the line 1 inch from it. Keep the long fold straight.
- 2
Fold the right side behind
Fold the right edge behind along its matching 1-inch line. The two hidden side flaps narrow the trousers.
- 3
Fold down the waistband
Fold the top edge down along its 1-inch line. The white reverse shows across the middle of the waistband.
- 4
Separate the trouser legs
Mark a 1-inch-wide gap in the middle of the bottom edge. Cut straight up each side to 3½ inches below the original top edge and join the cuts across. Remove that narrow scrap, leaving the legs joined across the hips.
- 5
Turn up both cuffs
Fold the bottom inch of each leg upward along the marked line. Keep the two cuffs level, with the white reverse showing inside each one.
