An Origami Tutor letterfold with a closed pentagonal knot and two tails. Fold the note into a narrow band, cross one end and pass it through the loop.
- You need
- One 2:1 rectangle of thin paper, such as 20 × 10 cm. No glue or scissors.
- Start
- Use a 2:1 rectangular note, white side up, with its long edges at the top and bottom. Write your message on the white side before folding.
- Tips
- Use thin paper so the four-layer strip bends neatly.
- Pull both tails gently so the centre closes without crumpling the band.
Your model is ready
Flatten the closed overhand knot and spread the two tails. Your message is folded inside.
Step-by-step diagrams
- 1
Fold the note in half
Bring the lower long edge up to the upper edge, hiding the message inside.
- 2
Make a narrow strip
Fold the doubled band in half upward once more. The strip is eight times as long as it is wide.
- 3
Bend the right end across
Fold the long right end down and left along the slanted line. Keep the left tail straight.
- 4
Bring the end up behind
Bring the same free end up behind the band along the next slanted line. Leave the first tail in place.
- 5
Bring the end down across the loop
Fold the free end back down along the top edge of the loop. The band now crosses itself in three places.
- 6
Close the overhand knot
Pass the free end through the loop, beneath its front band and over the other tail. Pull the tails gently apart until the five-sided centre closes.
- 7
Turn the knot upright
Turn the note so both tails point down and apart.
- ✓
Finish
Flatten the closed overhand knot and spread the two tails. Your message is folded inside.
