IntermediateAn Origami Tutor design32 stepsEight 4 × 4 in squares · 8 paper pieces

An Origami Tutor modular star with eight equal sharp points, alternating blue and white around a small open centre. Fold each square into a triangular ray in three folds, then glue the overlapping bases into a ring.

You need
Eight equal squares of thin origami paper, four blue and four white, and a little paper glue. No scissors.
Start
Take eight equal squares, four blue and four white. Lay them white side up, one corner pointing up, in two rows of four. Alternate the colours from left to right in each row.
Tips
  • Make each ray's two upper edges meet at the middle line.
  • Keep all eight bases the same distance from the centre.
  • Use glue only where neighbouring bases overlap.

Finish

Your model is ready

Match the gaps between all eight points. Glue the last base to the first where they overlap, leaving the small centre opening clear. Let the glue dry before lifting the star. The finished eight-point modular star, with alternating blue and white triangular rays.

Steps 1–7

  1. 1

Ray 1: fold the left side in

Bring the upper left edge to the line from the top corner to the bottom corner. Keep the top point sharp.

  2. 2

Ray 1: fold the right side in

Bring the upper right edge to the middle line too, making a long kite point.

  3. 3

Ray 1: fold the short tail behind

Fold the bottom corner behind along the straight line between the kite's shoulders. Keep the long outer point free.

  4. 4

Ray 2: fold the left side in

Bring the upper left edge to the line from the top corner to the bottom corner. Keep the top point sharp.

Fold the bottom corner behind along the straight line between the kite's shoulders. Keep the long outer point free.

  4. 25

    Place the first ray

Place the first ray with its sharp point up. Its straight base will border the small centre opening.

  5. 26

    Add ray 2

Turn the next ray 45° farther round. Overlap its base with the last ray, leaving the same small opening at the centre. Glue only the overlap; keep the outer point free.

  6. 27

    Add ray 3

Turn the next ray 45° farther round. Overlap its base with the last ray, leaving the same small opening at the centre. Glue only the overlap; keep the outer point free.

  7. 28
